Day 2

Whoops. I think I messed up the posting of those pics. Yesterday was pretty amazing. I didn't realize how much there is to see in the middle of nowhere. We covered 500 miles through MO and Kansas. We stopped in Columbia for lunch at a crazy little place called "Booches" (see pic). They serve hamburgers on wax paper, supposedly some of the best ever. They have mounted animal heads on the wall (this is becoming quite a common site) and many pool tables. We had locally brewed wheat beers. I had grilled cheese and chips (delish!!). It was a great suggestion and we got to walk around the University of Missouri which is not nearly as beautiful as Indiana.

Kansas, contrary to what I had been told, is very lovely as well. And it is the first place I've seen so far that really looks nothing like Indiana. We drove through the Flint Hills which are basically small mounds of grasslands with tons of grazing cattle, surrounded by windmills and oil diggers. Very interesting to the eye. Herb and I listened to some of our History of the US CDs to make us smart and lots of music. Our anthem for the trip is "Californication" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers-not bad.
Last night we ate at a steakhouse in a town of about 300 people called Bunker Hill. It was literally in the middle of nowhere-no signs of life anywhere. But according to Herb, the meat was quite good. I had salmon (probably a mistake), a twice baked potato and corn. And of course, more mounted animal heads. We stayed in a Holiday Inn-not as nice as our Ramada.
Today we are off to Boulder!!!! Yea!! Our first real destination!!!

Check out the picture of "EMMA, MO"!!

Positive mention of the Flint Hills always gets my attention! Thanks!
So happy it brought me to your site. Next time you are through, please take the time to get off the Interstate, between the Monuments, and slow down for a bit...drive down the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, for example; and visit the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, for a couple of hours. Drink in the quiet of the open space with grasses waving and wildlife all around you. It is not Boulder, but it is a distinctive experience that I hope you will try.

Our 22 county Flint Hills Tourism Coalition, Inc. promotes visits to the Kansas Flint Hills – the website is: http://www.kansasflinthills.travel/

Best wishes!
Dr. Bill ;-)
